Chris Hemsworth says he is contractually done playing Thor after the fourth “Avengers” movie.
Speaking with USA Today, the 34-year old actor confirmed what comic book fan have been fearing; Hemsworth’s is moving on from Thor. “Yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again,” said Hemsworth.
The star has completed filming his last two appearances as Thor, but could he be persuaded to re-sign?
“It’s sort of a scary thought,” said Hemsworth. “This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing.”
The “12 Strong” actor has played the god of thunder five times since entering the MCU, and is slated to play the character two more times, first in “Avengers: Infinity War” in May and again in “Avengers 4” due out in May 2019.
In an interview with Screen Rant about his upcoming film “12 Strong”, Hemsworth described a potential reason for retiring the hammer for good. “Shooting a green screen can be kind of mind numbing and exhausting from a standpoint of just being kind of bored.”
Fans were hoping that Hemsworth’s interest in the character was rejuvenated after “Thor Ragnorak.” He and director Taika Waititi looked to be having a ton of fun on set. Would Hemsworth be up for a return if the script was right (and more importantly…the money), or is he looking to separate himself from the superhero role.
“I much prefer to being busy in the thick of it and being visually sort of stimulated,” Chris Hemsworth said about acting in front of a green screen. “And when you don’t have to act afraid or full of adrenaline or something because of the environment around you is pressing that upon you and is influencing you in such a way, it is the best.”
In the comics, Thor has been deemed unworthy to carry his hammer and has been replaced by Jane Foster. Marvel Studios could be looking for an actress to replace Hemsworth, yet it seems highly unlikely that Natalie Portman (who played Jane Foster in the first two “Thor” films) would be up for a return to the MCU.
It is a sad time for comic book movie fans. Hugh Jackman already exited as Wolverine, and both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans contracts will be expiring soon. We might be losing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Wolverine all in time span of 3 years. It’s an end of an era. Not to mention that Ben Affleck looks to be searching for the Bat-Exit. At least we still have a great Spider-Man in Tom Holland.
Don’t you dare leave us Tom. Ben, we understand if you must go.
